I was on the treadmill this morning reading Dr OZ ‘The Good Life’ magazine and I came across an article about the liver. The liver and how it works is very dear to my heart because my mother and aunt both died of liver problems. The article had some interesting facts. Did you know the liver has more than 500 jobs it has to do to keep you healthy. It’s the size of a deflated football and weighs about three pounds. It has the superpower of re-growing back to its normal size within a few weeks when as much as 75% has been removed.That is an amazing organ! The liver is the bodies central refinery, everything you put in your mouth goes through this extraordinary organ. One of Its jobs is to turn carbs into fuel for muscles. It acts like a sieve to clear out any irritant and sends them to the large intestine to be eliminated. Eating a healthy diet is so important because excess fats and sugar can cause the liver cells to swell and die. No more than 3000mg of acetaminophen a day. Limit alcohol to one drink a day or less. Acetaminophen and alcohol together up the risk of damage. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise, about 28 million people have it now and a 50% increase by the year 2023 is predicted because of the obesity rate. Now that’s a scary prediction! Next time I want a piece of cheesecake, I’m going to think about how hard my liver is going to have to work, it will make it much easier to resist.
